AT&T To Get Rid Of Unlimited Data Plans

Starting June 7, 2010 At&T is foregoing the too good to be true, unlimited data plan. As a web designer, mobile notary, and Christian minister, I would suffer from this change if it was mandatory for current iPhone users. The new data plans are masked behind the "make it more affordable" to the masses. It is actually a way out of the unlimited plan that seems to be making AT&T's bandwidth cry for mercy these days. The plans will look like this according to the latest AT&T press release:

The new AT&T plans provide large amounts of data to enable people to enjoy their favorite online activities:

  • DataPlus. Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 1,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 150 emails with attachments, plus view 400 Web pages, plus post 50 photos on social media sites, plus watch 20 minutes of streaming video – for just $15 per month.**  This plan, which can save customers up to 50 percent off their wireless data charges, is designed for people who primarily like to surf the web, send email and use social networking apps. If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will receive an additional 200 MB of data usage for $15 for use in the cycle.  Currently, 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.
  • DataPro. Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 10,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 1,500 emails with attachments, plus view 4,000 Web pages, plus post 500 photos to social media sites, plus watch 200 minutes of streaming video – for $25 per month.**  Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10 for use in the cycle.  Currently, 98 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.
  • Tethering. Smartphone customers – including iPhone customers – who choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month.  Tethering lets customers use their tethering-enabled smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.

Some good news for current smartphone users: Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

Another fabulous addition for mobile notaries or other career-mongers who require tethering: Tethering is available and even for the iPhone, no more jailbreak :)

Macbook and Macbook Pro take 6GB RAM

According to the memory company RAMJET, it has been discovered that both the Macbook and Macbook Pro are not limited to 4GB of RAM. If you simply add a 4GB stick in one slot and keep a 2GB stick in the other, the Macbook and Macbook Pro will use the 6GB.

Blackberry 7310e and Mac

Well I bought this Blackberry 7310e off of ebay for $67 plus shipping. Pretty great deal considering that the phone goes for over $250 retail. I ended buying the phone because Blackberry’s are finally compatible with Mac thanks ot PocketMac software. Considering that the Blackberry PocketMac software is free makes all worth the try.

I will follow up with a review of my experience with the Blackberry 7310e and my Mac Laptop.

Mac G4 Powerbook Adapter Broken

Macally Mac Power AdaptersI got my G4 Powerbook back in May 2005 and I still love the laptop, but my main problem has been the power adapter issues. The stock adapter got a short in it within one year, and I had to replace it. The stock mac power adapter would have cost me about $85 and I refused to buy it at that price.

So I bought this aftermarket power adapter from Macally off of ebay for about $35 including shipping. Well, this Mac power adapter is now shorting out badly and will need replacing. The good thing is I could buy one of these Macally power adapters for less than $25 including shipping today. I guess that is why the MacBooks and MacBook Pro’s have the magnetic power adapters.

XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii for $55Being a pastor and a father of three daughters, I have made a decision to sell my XBOX 360 Premium and all my games as well. I have a decent military background and was always compelled to play shooters and military strategy games, and my daughters would end up catching a glimpse of this action.

I decided this about 12 Noon on Saturday and began scanning my favorite classifieds site, craigslist.org. I began making calls and ended up finding a Nintendo Wii in Richardson, TX for $330 (overpriced but out of stock everywhere). I listed my XBOX on craigslist about 1 PM and sold it by 2:30 PM that day and picked up the Nintendo Wii with the money.

I used to always revert to eBay first, but with craigslist being local I have decided my first thought will now be craigslist.org.

The Canon HG10 and Bestpricecameras.com

I posted earlier about the Canon HG10 and iLife 08. I wanted to bring my findings and hopefully steer someone else in the right direction. After reading many forums and reviews I decided to change my order from a Canon HG10 to a Canon HV20. The Canon HV20 is an HD camcorder that uses Mini-DV versus HDD.

The reason I changed to a Mini-DV camcorder is because HDD cameras and especially AVCHD types, lose picture quality once decompressed through iMovie and iMovie is one of the only programs that can edit AVCHD formats. Basically the best picture you get on an AVCHD camcorder is through the viewing screen of the camcorder itself. The unfortunate part of not buying the HG10 is that you lose the ability to use the tapeless features of iMovie in iLife 08, but the picture quality has little loss with the HV20 and it cost less as well.

Now I have unfortunate news regarding how and whom, I bought the Canon HV20 from.Bestpricecameras.com is bait-and-switch scheme, a sham. The shopping comparison site ShopCartUSA.com is also a front fro these groups of websites that advertise the cameras for 50% off retail then they call you to tell you you must buy the battery and charger for $300.

I told them no thank you as I found the accessories on ebay, and they hung up on me. I called a week later and they said it was out of stock and that it would take weeks on backorder. I then hung up and called about 30 minutes later with another name and tried to order the same camera with the full package and wamo! They instantly found a model available and in stock. I then referred to my order number from the week before and they hung up again. I called back and all of a sudden the customer service center message told me they were closed because it was after hours. Problem was it was 1 PM CST. Also these supposed companies have the same type of website setup and affiliated with ShopCartUSA.com as well:

  • expresscameras.com
  • expecam.com
  • broadwayphoto.com
  • cameraaddict.com
  • 1wayphoto.com
  • lensesnmore.com
  • expocameras.com
  • fotoconnection.com
  • abesofmaine.com

I say stay away from these false advertising companies and stick with legit retailers.

The Canon HG10 – AVCHD and the Mac

As a Mac owner I am happy with iLife and it’s many features, but I lacked a good camcorder for my family. My thing about iMovie being able to edit in HD was, “Great, like I will ever use that technology any time soon.” Well HD Camcorders are much more affordable to the consumer now. After watching the iLife ’08 guided tour, I was compelled to look for HD Camcorders for me and my family. I found a list of compatible camcorders on the apple site, and narrowed my search to Hard Drive based cameras with AVCHD fomat. This way any camcorder I choose will be able to use all the features involved in iMovie ’08.My search came to a good end as I found the Canon HG10 at BestPriceCameras.com for a whopping $369. Do not be fooled by the rock bottom price of $369 because any of these companies offer the camcorder only at that price. Then they will ask if you want the AC Charger priced at $179 and a battery priced at $129 which would make the camera a larger total of $677 which is still much cheaper than the retail price. Ecost sells the HG10 for $1099 and it usually never drops below $899.I decided to look for third-party adapters and chargers. I came up with some good results. On ebay a highly popular powerseller was selling an AC Adapter for $14.99 plus $8 shipping so I bought it. On ebay another reputable powerseller was selling 2 hour battery and charger for $3 plus $11 shipping so I bought it. Then I went on BestPriceCameras.com and bought the camcorder for $369 with free shipping and it came with a tripod, light, and lens cleaning kit.The online shopping experience can be detailed but at least it can all happen from your desk chair. I walked away with a Canon HG10, with everything I need, for $407 out the door including shipping, handling, and taxes. I will blog about the camcorder once I get all the products delivered to me.
